Lifeguard Blending Learning
Be Prepared to Prevent, Protect and Respond with a Red Cross Lifeguarding course at the YMCA.
The r.24 Lifeguarding program prepares lifeguards to prevent, protect and respond to aquatic emergencies. This is a blended learning course with an online learning and in class portion – Red Cross blended learning curriculum combines online learning with in-person sessions where you will practice skills and demonstrate competency.
All lifeguard participants must complete the required swimming skills prerequisite prior to taking and completing the final skills assessment.
Prerequisites:
1. Minimum age: 15 years;
2. Complete a swim- tread-swim sequence: Jump into the water, submerge, resurface, swim 150 yards (using the front crawl breaststroke or a combination of both) maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs then swim 50 yards using the front crawl breaststroke or a combination of both.
3. Complete a timed event within 1 minute 40 seconds by starting in the water swimming 20 yards to retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point holding the object at the surface with both hands, and exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
4. Online coursework must be completed prior to dates of in-class portion.
Successful completion of the course will provide each candidate with a Red Cross Lifeguarding Certificate valid 2 years.
